Two perspectives. One platform.
FF Twin combines deep aerodynamic expertise with product and business development experience.
Finn and Flemming met through a shared professional network. One day, Finn started talking about his PhD work, the models he had developed, and what he wanted to do with that knowledge.
Flemming invited him to the office to continue the conversation where Finn explained his long-term ambition of building the best drone ever.
That led to a different question: what if the value was not in building one exceptional drone, but in turning Finn's knowledge into a platform that could help others develop better UAVs?
Flemming shared the story of Unity, a technology that was first built to support the development of one game, but the bigger opportunity became the platform itself: an engine that enabled other developers to build their own games faster and more efficiently.
The same principle became the starting point for FF Twin. Instead of using advanced modelling for one project at a time, the ambition is to make expertise knowledge available as a development platform for drones and other unmanned systems.
Finn brought the technical depth. Flemming brought the commercial and product perspective. Together, they have shaped what FF Twin is today — and what the platform can become over time.
Co-founder, Research & Aerodynamic Modelling
Finn Matras holds a PhD from NTNU — the Norwegian University of Science and Technology — and specialises in aerodynamic modelling, simulation and control of multirotor systems.
His research focuses on dynamic inflow: the physics of how rotors interact with their own and each other's airflow, and what those interactions mean for efficiency, control and vehicle design. His research has also been recognised with a Best Paper Award at ICSTCC 2022.
His work provides an important part of the technical foundation behind FF Twin's modelling approach and makes it possible to analyse effects that are often simplified or ignored in conventional UAV development.
Before his PhD, Finn worked on engineering projects including Scandinavia's first 4WD electric racing car with Revolve NTNU and later worked as an electrical engineer in the consumer industry.
Co-founder, Product & Business Development
Flemming Bækdal brings product strategy, commercial development and more than 20 years of sales and marketing experience to FF Twin.
His focus is on turning advanced technical knowledge into a product that companies can understand, adopt and use in practice — and on building the commercial model, partnerships and market position around the platform.
At FF Twin, Flemming works across product development and business development, helping translate technical possibilities into a coherent platform with clear value for UAV manufacturers, operators and partners.
FF Twin sits between advanced engineering and practical product development. Building the platform requires both.
Finn understands the physics, the models and what can technically be calculated. Flemming focuses on how that knowledge can be structured, packaged and developed into a product that solves real problems for the industry.
That combination is what allows FF Twin to move from research and specialist knowledge toward a platform that can be used across the UAV development process.
We work with UAV companies at different stages of development — from early design decisions and optimisation to testing new concepts and improving existing platforms.
